As Netflix grows across more countries, it gives people worldwide the opportunity to try new things and experience television and films they otherwise wouldn’t ever know about. January has proven to be cold and unforgiving, so what better time to stay inside and take advantage of some of the new movies and shows released on Netflix around the world?
‘The Overnight’ (2015) – USA, Canada – January 15th, 2016
Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation, Step Brothers) and Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black, Argo) star as a couple who have recently moved to Los Angeles, and make friends with an eccentric pair who invite them over for a play-date for their sons. After putting the kids to bed, ‘The Overnight’ becomes a rampant, raunchy comedy romp. Jason Schwartzman (Funny People, Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp) is once again on top form.
‘Riddick’ (2013) – Netherlands, Luxembourg – January 16th, 2016
In arguably his most memorable role to date, Vin Diesel stars as wanted survivalist Riddick in the third self-titled box office outing in an increasingly popular series, The Chronicles of Riddick. ‘Riddick’ sees the titular anti-hero stranded in a harsh wilderness on a distant planet, battling both a crew of mercenaries and the planet’s searing, deadly heat. Alongside Vin Diesel, Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) and Dave Bautista (WWE, Guardians of the Galaxy) also star.
‘Operações Especiais’ [Special Operations] (2015) – Brazil –
For a taste of some international action, give ‘Operações Especiais’ a try. Politically-fueled, this Brazilian crime-drama-action combo looks to strike close to home, it sees a specialist group of police are dispatched to a corner of Rio de Janeiro to solve its high crime problem. They soon find themselves battling against corruption and for their lives, as the citizens begin to question whether the police are there to help.
‘The Librarian 2’ (2006) – Norway – January 15th, 2016
ER’s Noah Wyle leads this action-adventure US TV movie, that again pits Indy-esque explorer (and former librarian) Flynn Carsen against all manner of dangers on their journey through Africa to discover King Solomon’s lost mines. Look out for Erick Avari (who by coincidence also starred in The Mummy) and Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation).
‘Hyde Park on Hudson’ (2012) – USA – January 16th, 2016
Bill Murray fans haven’t seen much of their beloved master of comedy in recent years – outside of a special Netflix Christmas special and his routine Wes Anderson partnerships, Murray has been carefully selecting which projects he wishes to steal the limelight in. Less comedic than to perhaps be expected, ‘Hyde Park on Hudson’ sees Bill put in a good shift as President Franklin D. Roosevelt hosting the King and Queen of England in New York on the eve of World War II. Laura Linney (The Truman Show, Mystic River) help drives things forward dramatically as FDR’s cousin, whose diaries were the basis for the film script.
‘Sirens’ – Season 2 (2014) – USA – January 15th, 2016
The second and last series of the American adaptation of the UK show by the same name, ‘Sirens’ follows a trio of paramedics around as they encounter a series of comedic situations in their pursuit to help those in need. Michael Mosley (Drew from ‘Scrubs’) leads the way, with American TV regulars Kevin Daniels, Jessica McNamee Kevin Bigley right along side.
‘Gotham’ – Season 1 (2014) – Netherlands – January 16th, 2016
Several films and a slew of games in recent years just wasn’t enough for fans of DC’s dark knight. Enter ‘Gotham’, a crime-drama taking full advantage of the rapid increase in popularity of live-action TV adaptations of comic book stories, currently in its second season in under eighteen months. With a strong roster of actors and an interesting shift in focus away from Batman, and on to Commissioner Gordon, ‘Gotham’ offers people the opportunity to explore the origins of Batman’s greatest foes, as well as witness the immediate aftermath of the deaths of Bruce Wayne’s parents. The OC’s Ben McKenzie stars as Gordon, pitted against the likes of Jada Pinkett Smith and Robin Lord Taylor.
‘Phineas and Ferb’ – Season 1 (2007) – Argentina, Brazil, Mexico – January 15th, 2016
Guilty pleasure for adults? Some will be finding excuses to watch this charming animated series with distant young cousins and godchildren whenever possible. This long-running children’s series about two siblings seeking to entertain themselves during the summer break (to the annoyance of their older sister). A success story of modern cartooning times, ‘Phineas and Ferb’ is a subtly smart show with a penchant for well-utilised running gags.
